HISTORY

A holiday in paradise…an enchantment which has repeated itself for more 100 years.
It was the "Belle Epoque" and the Grand Hotel Victoria of Menaggio was at it's
most splendid. The grand British, German and Russian families came from the Engadine
mountains, followed by large chests, suitcases and hat-boxes, on grand horse-drawn
coaches, which stopped in the square in front of the hotel.
The servants quickly took away the luggage while the rest of the palace welcomed
the guests into it's sumptuous halls, with it's Liberty chandeliers ornate stairways
decorated with golden friezes. It was the beginning of the long holiday period,
which for some wealthy families lasted for three of four months, during which
you could enjoy sports and trips on the Lake. Today wind-surfing and water-skiing
substitute the ancient regattas and rowing boats, but at the Grand Hotel Victoria
you can still feel the atmosphere of one hundred years ago, thanks to a careful
restoration which has faithfully kept it's original style.
